Today is world wildlife day. Chosen as it is the d Today is world wildlife day. Chosen as it is the day that CITES was signed back in 1973. So it's 50 years old. While we can all recognize the valuable conservative contribution that the convention has played, at the same time we have to ask ourselves this: With North Korea and South Sudan being the ONLY two countries not to have signed, why the hell are we still facing challenges such as ivory and rhino horn trade 50 years down the line? So frankly it's a sort of bitter sweet birthday IMHO. Like so many of these "international days" there is a bit more behind it. Not that you would know that from most social media. I realize there is not much celebration or comedy in this post, so I tried to compensate with the image. Which is of one pretty keen birder, and someone who probably had the book open at the penguin page...🤣
Warming up for season 2023! Warming up for season 2023!
Imagine being on a rock with shards of iron age po Imagine being on a rock with shards of iron age pottery. A place where our forefathers have looked out over pristine wilderness for thousands of years. Imagine hearing a large elephant herd breaking branches as they move through the wilderness as they have done for thousands of years. Then you look up and envisage that our little rocky planet exists under a sky that has evolved and changed for 14 billion years. Our little rock has been there for 4 of these few billion. We intelligent beings have been looking at it all for a few thousand of these years. Our understanding of most of it is literally a couple of hundred years. Our knowledge that there are other galaxies is 100 years old. Our knowledge that dark matter exists is a few decades old. We are scratching the surface of what it means to exist.
"what do you do on a day with no guests?" What wou "what do you do on a day with no guests?" What would you do? ,🤣
Sometimes sundowners on the rock go on a bit! It' Sometimes sundowners on the rock go on a bit! It's not the first time that guests decide to stay out longer and witness the majesty of our clear skies as they come to life as darkness falls. Or in this case some very unseasonal clouds illuminated by a full moon! 🤣
